About the CLAT ( Common Law Admission Test)

The Common Law Admission Test, also referred to as CLAT, is an entrance exam centralised at the national level and required for admission to India's twenty-two National Law Universities (NLU). These scores are also used for admissions decisions at the majority of India's private and self-financed law schools. Public sector corporations in India use scores from the CLAT Post Graduation exam, such as ONGC, Coal India, BHEL, Steel Authority of India, and Oil India, amongst others, to hire candidates for legal positions within the companies.

After completing the Higher Secondary Examination or the 12th grade, applicants for admission to integrated undergraduate degree programmes in Law (BA LLB) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) programmes at these law schools are required to take the exam. Candidates for these programmes must have already graduated from a law school. The admission percentage for this examination is as low as 3%, which contributes to its reputation as one of India's most difficult entrance examinations.
