Liverpool John Moores University (also known as LJMU) is a public research university in the city of Liverpool, England. The origins of the university can be traced to the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts, established in 1823. In 1992, Liverpool Polytechnic was granted university status through an Act of Parliament, changing its name to Liverpool John Moores University. It is named after Sir John Moores, a local businessman and philanthropist who donated to the university's predecessor institutions.
