The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as the Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli, located in the center of Tamil Nadu on the banks of the Kaveri River, was established in 1964 as a joint and cooperative venture of the Central and State Government to meet the needs of the nation in terms of manpower in the technology sector.

The institute attained the status of Deemed University in 2003 and was renamed as National Institute of Technology (NIT) as a result of its rich experience. NIT Trichy has also been given the status of Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in 2007.

NIT Trichy boasts of innumerable facilities on the campus to make the life of the students more enjoyable and conducive to studies. This campus is spread over 800 acres in Tiruchirappalli city of Tamil Nadu. The institute comprises a large campus with well-developed infrastructure. There are separate hostels for boys and girls, and it can accommodate more than 5000 students at a time.

NIT Trichy offers a two-year MBA course. This course is taught through the Department of Management Studies. NIT Trichy accepts admission to this course through CAT entrance test followed by a Personal Interview round. Additionally, candidates must also have proven work experience to gain admission.
