The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as the Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli, located in the center of Tamil Nadu on the banks of the Kaveri River, was established in 1964 as a joint and cooperative venture of the Central and State Government to meet the needs of the nation in terms of manpower in the technology sector. The institute attained the status of Deemed University in 2003 and was renamed as National Institute of Technology Trichy (NIT Trichy) as a result of its rich experience. NIT Trichy has also been given the status of Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in 2007.
NIT Trichy is designated as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India as per the National Institutes of Technological Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007 and is one of the members of the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) system, a group of centrally funded technical institutes governed by the NITSER Council.
The
institute receives funding from the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of
India and focuses solely on courses such as BTech, MBA, science, technology and
architecture. The institute offers 10 undergraduate, 42 postgraduate and 17
doctoral programs across its 17 academic departments, awarding over 2,000
degrees every year.

The Institute was founded in 1964 with three engineering departments, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. In the year 1967, the departments of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical & Materials Engineering were added.
The Department of Electronics & Communication
Engineering was added in the year 1968. The faculty of this department played a
key role in the establishment and ongoing management of Campus Communication
Services (CCS), National Knowledge Network (NKN) and Virtual Classroom of the
Institute.
Additionally, the departments of Production Engineering
started in 1977, Architecture in 1980, Computer Science and Engineering in
1982, and Instrumentation and Control Engineering were started in 1993.
NIT Trichy offers a two-year MBA course. This course is taught through the Department of Management Studies. NIT Trichy accepts admission to this course through the CAT entrance test, followed by a Personal Interview round. Additionally, candidates must also have proven work experience to gain admission.
For two years, including institute and hostel fees for Open, Open-EWS, OBC-NCL, EWS category, is Rs 4.35 lakh (approx.) and for SC/ST Category: Institute and Hostel Fee is Rs 3 lakh (approx).
NIT Trichy Admission Process:
The admission in undergraduate programs is based on Entrance Exams - JEE Mains (Joint Entrance Examination), followed by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) Counselling. The admissions in postgraduate programs are based on Entrance exams - GATE, CUET PG.

NIT Trichy have many facilities on the campus to make the life of the students more enjoyable and conducive to studies. This campus is spread over 800 acres in Tiruchirappalli city of Tamil Nadu. The institute has a large campus with well-developed infrastructure. There are separate hostels for boys and girls, and it can accommodate more than 5000 students at a time.
The NIT, Tiruchirappalli, has excellent infrastructure. The university provides a huge and green campus. It houses academic blocks, student hostels, labs, library, auditoriums, a fully WI-FI campus, gym, music room, dance room, cafeteria and sports arena.
