Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is one of
the premier engineering institutions in India. IIT Bombay was founded in 1958. Parliament
declared IIT an Institute of National Importance in 1961. In 1946, the
Government of India constituted a committee which proposed the creation of four
prestigious Institutes of Technology to guide the progress of technical
education in the country.
The scheme began in 1957 and the first batch of 100 students
was admitted in 1958. Since its inception in Powai, the institute has expanded
physically to include over 584 major buildings with a combined area of over
2.2 square kilometres.
Here's an overview of the courses, fees, and admission
process:
Courses Offered:
IIT Bombay offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral
programs in various fields of engineering, technology, science, design, and
management. Some of the popular courses include:
Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in various disciplines such
as Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering,
etc.
Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) programs.
Master of Technology (M.Tech) programs in specialized areas.
Master of Science (M.Sc) programs in subjects like Physics,
Chemistry, Mathematics, and Environmental Science.
Master of Design (M.Des) program.
Master of Management (M.Mgmt) program.
Doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in various departments.
Fees:
The fee structure at IIT Bombay varies for different
programs and categories of students (Indian nationals, foreign nationals, and
sponsored candidates). However, here's a general idea:
For undergraduate programs (B.Tech), the total fees for
Indian nationals are approximately around INR 1.19 lakhs per annum, including
tuition fees, hostel fees, mess charges, etc.
For postgraduate programs (M.Tech, M.Sc, M.Des, etc.), the
fees vary depending on the program and category of the student. It can range
from INR 20,000 to 2 lakhs per semester.
For doctoral programs (Ph.D.), the fees are relatively lower
compared to undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
It's important to note that the fee structure may change
from year to year, and students should refer to the official website of IIT
Bombay for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Admission Process:
The admission process for undergraduate programs (B.Tech) at
IIT Bombay is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, which is
conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for admission to
various IITs across the country.
For postgraduate programs (M.Tech, M.Sc, M.Des, etc.) and
doctoral programs (Ph.D.), the admission process generally involves the
following steps:
Candidates need to qualify in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for M.Tech admissions or in the Joint Admission Test for
M.Sc (JAM) for M.Sc admissions.
For Ph.D. admissions, candidates need to qualify in
national-level exams like GATE, CSIR NET, UGC NET, or other equivalent exams.
Shortlisted candidates are usually called for written tests and/or interviews conducted by the respective departments at IIT Bombay. Final selection is based on the performance in the entrance exam, written test, interview, academic records, and other relevant criteria.
