FRI's sprawling 450-hectare campus is a one-of-a-kind combination of tradition and modernity. The Grand Center Building, designed in Greco-Roman style, is a national historic property. FRI does research in a range of forestry topics, including Silviculture, Forest Management, and Wildlife Biology. It influences India's forestry policies and practices significantly.
The institute provides a variety of postgraduate studies
(M.Sc. and Ph.D.) in forestry and related fields. FRI does not have regular
undergraduate programs like engineering universities, but it does provide
training for Indian Forest Service officials and professionals from various
state forest departments. Although
postgraduate programs are available at FRI, they are not designed in the same
way as regular engineering college courses.
FRI's contributions to forestry education and research are
well recognized. FRI and other specialty institutes do not have official
rankings, but their impact on India's forest conservation operations and
reputation is evident. Since most of its graduates go on to work in government
forestry services or pursue careers in research, placements are not FRI's main
focus. For individuals devoted to the
conservation of forests, FRI is a unique organization. Its basis in science and
knowledge is creating the platform for an environmentally conscious future for
India.
