What is Group Discussion?
Research has found that communication and interpersonal
behavior are very important managerial skills. Group discussions are used by institutions to assess the communication, teamwork, and leadership skills of the
candidate. GD is also used by B-Schools, Colleges and universities to
assess the communication and interpersonal skills of candidates during the
admission process including MBA admission. In a standard group discussion, a
group of students is given a topic to discuss for about 20 to 30 minutes.
There is no official leader or follower appointed for the group discussion. Admissions experts check the students' English language skills, clarity of thoughts, ability to present arguments convincingly, and confidence.
Group Discussion (GD) topics can be broadly classified into four main types:
Type of GD Topics | Description |
Current Affairs | Topics relating to current events or progress in politics, economics, foreign affairs and similar fields. |
Business & Economy | Concerns related to the commercial landscape and economic
strategies. |
Abstract Topics | Discussions that involve conceptual analysis, requiring creative thinking and personal interpretation. |
Social Issues | Conversations about social issues and ethical dilemmas. |
