The Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) are premier,
centrally funded business schools in India. As of 2026, there are 22 autonomous
IIMs across the country, with IIM Guwahati being the newest campus.
IIMs offer undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and
executive programs in the field of business administration, alongside various
other courses. The Indian Institutes of Management were established at the
initiative of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, based on the
recommendation of the Planning Commission of India.
Following the enactment of the Indian Institutes of
Management Act, 2017, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)
declared the IIMs as Institutes of National Importance. Under this Act, the
IIMs were granted greater autonomy in managing their day-to-day operations.
The Act replaced the IIM Council with the IIM Coordination
Forum as the governing body for the institutes. The IIMs were given significant
freedom to make decisions regarding their courses, fees, and other related
matters.
