MCAT Syllabus 2025: The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized,
multiple-choice test designed to assess your problem-solving, critical
thinking, and knowledge of natural, behavioural, and social science concepts
and principles that are essential to the study of medicine. The MCAT is divided
into four sections, each of which focuses on different areas of knowledge:
1. Biological and Biochemical Basis of Living Systems: This
section evaluates your understanding of the processes unique to living
organisms, such as growth, reproduction, and homeostasis. It includes concepts
from biology, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and biochemistry.
2. Chemical and Physical Basis of Biological Systems: This
section assesses your knowledge of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical
functions of human tissues, organs, and organ systems.
3. Psychological, Social and Biological Bases of Behaviour:
This section tests your understanding of how psychological, social and
biological factors influence perceptions and responses to the world, behaviour
and behaviour change, and the relationships between social stratification,
access to resources and well-being.
4. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills: This section measures your ability to analyse, evaluate and apply information provided in passages from a variety of disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences.
Each of these sections is designed to test specific
abilities and fundamental concepts that are critical to success in medical
school. For a comprehensive overview of the topics covered in each section, you
can refer to the AAMC's "What's on the MCAT Exam?" resource.
To help you prepare, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) offers free planning and study resources, including the Khan Academy MCAT Collection, which contains sample content from all four sections of the exam. For detailed information on official policies, procedures, and the full curriculum, see "MCAT® Essentials for Testing Year 2025" provided by the AAMC.
