MBBS or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery is one of the most preferred and prestigious courses in India. By completing an MBBS degree, candidates become qualified doctor. MBBS admission in India is based on the NEET UG exam conducted by NTA. It is the only entrance exam for government medical colleges, private medical colleges and deemed medical colleges. Candidates have to register, qualify with the required cutoff and attend counselling for admission process.

Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) handles the All India Quota (AIQ) seats, while state authorities manage state quota admissions. To be eligible, candidates must have passed class 12 in science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology, English (which will include practical tests in these subjects) with at least 50% marks (40% for SC/ST/OBC).

The minimum age is 17 years as on 31 December of the admission year. Top medical colleges include AIIMS Delhi, JIPMER, CMC Vellore and KMC Manipal. Government MBBS fees range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 per year, while private and deemed colleges fees range from Rs 12 to Rs 25 lakh per year.

1. MBBS Admission Procedure

Every year, many students aim to start a medical career; however, only a few students are successful in gaining admission to MBBS programs in India, making the process highly competitive. Since many applicants compete for the limited seats available in prestigious medical colleges across the country, clearing the NEET UG exam is the first significant challenge in securing MBBS admission in India.

The NEET UG exam serves as the gateway to not only MBBS in India but also to over 2,000 seats in AIIMS institutes and 250 seats in JIPMER. Over 600 medical colleges, including 15+ AIIMS and 2 JIPMER institutes, determine MBBS admission 2025 based on NEET performance.

2. Step-by-Step guide for the MBBS admission process:

I) Check eligibility:

+ Academic qualification: Class 12th pass in science stream, with PCB (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) as a subject.

+ Minimum percentage: Candidates must have secured a minimum of 50% marks in the intermediate examination.

II) Choose the medical entrance exam:

+ National level exam: NEET (conducted by NTA)

III) Prepare for and appear in the entrance exams:

+ Make sure to appear for the exams on the scheduled dates and venues

+ Follow the exam guidelines and instructions.

IV)  Wait for the NEET result:

+ The results will be published on the official exam website of NEET conducting body.

+ Make sure to retrieve and store your scorecard or ranking letter after downloading them.

V) Attend All India and State counselling for the admission process:

+ Participate in counselling or admission processes.

+ Your NEET Score or Rank determines your eligibility for the counselling or admission stages.

+ Fill the form indicating your desired course (MBBS).

+ Attend the counselling session (online or offline for document verification).

+ Seats will be allotted based on merit, preferences and availability.

VI) Secure MBBS Admission 2025:

+ After seat allotment, complete the document verification process at the college to finalise your admission and pay the admission fee to secure your Admission.

3. NEET Counselling and Admission Process

A) Register for Counselling:

+ All India Quota (AIQ): Conducted by MCC for 15% seats in government colleges and 100% seats in deemed universities, AIIMS, and JIPMER.

+ State Counselling: Each state conducts its counselling for 85% state quota seats.

B) Choice Filling & Seat Allotment:

+ Candidates must choose colleges based on rank and preferences.

+ Document Verification & Fee Payment: After seat allotment, candidates must verify documents and pay the admission fee.

+ Final Admission & Reporting to College: Candidates must report to the allotted college within the given time frame.
