National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in India are
technical institutions owned by the Ministry of Education, which receive
funding from the central government. They are governed by the National
Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007, which
declared them to be Institutes of National Importance and prescribed their
powers, duties and framework for governance. There are 31 NITs listed in the
Act.
Each NIT is autonomous and linked to the others through a common council known as the NITSER Council, which oversees their administration. All NITs, which are funded by the Government of India, were recognized by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2024, with twenty-four of them ranked among the top 100 engineering institutions. The language of instruction in all these institutions is English. As of 2023, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs is 23,954.
